Arthur Bishop (Bronson), killer professionista, elimina su commissione il vecchio amico di suo padre Harry McKenna. Avendo scoperto che il figlio di McKenna, Steve (Vincent), ha tutte le "doti" necessarie per il mestiere, decide, di sua inizativa, di ammaestrarlo e prenderlo come socio nelle successive missioni che gli vengono assegnate. Il film, che ha qualche momento di marcata spettacolarità, nutre anche l'ambizione di istituire un parallelo fra la delinquenza spicciola e quella istituzionalizzata.
