Tommaso è un cantante senza fortuna che si guadagna da vivere per le strade e nelle osterie. Sua moglie Matilde è in attesa del loro primo figlio che però muore subito dopo il parto. Nelle stesse ore una ragazza madre muore nel dare alla luce un bambino, bello e sano. Con la complicità dell'ostetrica Tommaso e Matilde scambiano i piccoli e crescono con grande amore il bambino "rubato". Poi anche Matilde muore e Tommaso resta solo con il ragazzino. Un giorno però si fa vivo il padre naturale, un poco di buono, che ottiene dal tribunale la restituzione del piccolo.
