Nel 1886 le truppe americane del colonnello Beck sconfiggono definitivamente gli indiani di Geronimo, che verranno deportati in una riserva. Uno di loro, Massai, decide di continuare la lotta. Catturato, fugge e trova rifugio nella fattoria di un indiano cherokee che lo esorta a desistere. Denunciato dal rinnegato Hondo, Massai viene ripreso ma fugge di nuovo e con la sua compagna Nanline si rifugia sulle montagne, dove la donna darà alla luce un figlio.Aldrich avrebbe voluto un finale meno consolatorio: Hondo doveva sparare nella schiena a Massai nel momento in cui questo si voltava sentendo il pianto del figlio, ma esigenze produttive fecero andare le cose diversamente. Nascono comunque con questo film, il tipico eroe aldrichiano, e un filone di cinema più favorevole alle tematiche indiane.
